CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Good news for hockey fans as the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health gives the go-ahead for the next WHL season to hit the ice within the province.
The Alberta-based teams will be suiting up for the Central Division for the season opener on Feb. 26.
“The WHL appreciates the support we have received from Alberta Health as we work towards a safe return to play in the province,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in a release.
“With our extensive protocols and the necessary approvals now in place, we are looking forward to play getting underway in Alberta and allowing our players to continue their development at the highest level in the Canadian system.”
The Calgary Hitmen, Edmonton Oil Kings, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Red Deer Rebels, and Medicine Hat Tigers will join to form the Central Division with all 24 games to be played within Alberta.
The schedules have not yet been released.
The league will follow strict COVID-19 protocols, such as only playing one opponent per week, to limit spread of the virus.
Weekly tested will also be implemented.
