New scam targetting job seekers: RCMP

RED DEER (660 NEWS) – Police in Red Deer say they’re dealing with a new scam involving online game stores and job websites.

According to RCMP, it involves fraudsters getting in touch with people after their resume has been uploaded to a job search site.

The scammers will pretend to be the human resource manager of a multinational consultancy firm and claim to be sending a cheque of $1,250.

After the money is supposedly deposited into a bank account, people will be asked to purchase gift cards from the online game store Steam in $100 and $50 denominations.

RCMP say they became aware of at least two scams this week and are reminding people to never give out personal banking information to strangers over the phone or online.

If you believe you are being scammed, you’re asked to call your local RCMP or The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
