New Alberta licence plates available next week

If you have vehicle registration coming up, you may have a chance to get a new licence plate.

Albertans will soon be able to get the province’s new official licence plate, featuring an image of Moraine Lake and the slogan “Strong and Free.”

The redesigned plate will be available at registry offices across Alberta starting Monday, marking the first major overhaul of the province’s standard licence plate in more than four decades.

The province says the new design is intended to reflect Alberta’s identity, economic strength and provincial pride. The “Strong and Free” slogan references both Alberta’s Latin motto and a line from Canada’s national anthem.

The plate also includes the long-standing “Wild Rose Country” slogan.

Drivers who want to switch to the new plate before their vehicle registration renewal can do so by paying a $20 government fee, plus a $15 registry service charge. Those renewing their registration can receive the new plate by paying the registry service charge and any applicable renewal fees.

Existing licence plates will remain valid and do not need to be replaced if they remain in good condition.

The new plate follows a provincewide public competition that attracted more than 240,000 votes over three rounds. A design featuring Banff National Park’s Moraine Lake emerged as the winning choice.
