Edmonton trade school shooting: ASIRT investigating suspects’ injuries

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating injuries sustained by two men charged with murder in last month’s fatal shooting outside a northwest Edmonton trade school.
A man identified as 28-year-old Justin Hunt was shot and killed outside the Alberta Pipe Trades College on the morning of Oct. 16, 2026. Edmonton police have said the shooting was targeted.
Three men were later arrested by authorities on Highway 16.
Now the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says it’s investigating because two of the accused were allegedly injured at some point during that interaction with police.
After the trade school shooting, ASIRT says the Edmonton Police Service contacted the RCMP for assistance as a suspect vehicle was heading toward RCMP jurisdiction in Parkland County.
The Edmonton police helicopter monitored the suspect vehicle from the air, according to ASIRT, and the accused were stopped by the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) near the Yellowhead Highway and Highway 16A.
“ERT officers successfully disabled the vehicle and arrested three men at the scene,” ASIRT said in a news release.

The watchdog says the injuries sustained by the men were classified as a “level 1 matter,” meaning the injuries were serious or there are serious or sensitive allegations about an officer’s actions.
Wol Akuei, 21, John Morris, 20, and John Ocwalla, 19, were charged with first-degree murder. Ocwalla was also charged with accessory after the fact to murder. The allegations against the three accused have not been tested in court.
It’s not clear which two accused were injured.
