Man killed after minivan crashes into fire truck on Kingsway Avenue: Edmonton police

A man has died after a collision between his minivan and a firetruck near Kingsway Tuesday evening (Oct. 27). Alyssa Conti reports.

Police say a man is dead after he allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a fire truck in central Edmonton on Tuesday night.

The Edmonton Police Service believes speed and alcohol are possible factors in the 44-year-old man’s death.

Authorities say around 8:30 p.m., a Kia Sedona ran a red light while going east on Kingsway Avenue and it struck an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) truck going north on 101 Street.

The driver of the minivan was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries. The driver of the fire truck was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

Witnesses tell CityNews the accident was “pretty devastating” and “horrific.”

“I was sleeping with my dogs and heard a really loud crash, and then the horn from the fire truck was blaring,” recounted Kelly, who saw the immediate aftermath of the collision.

“I knew it was a fatality because the front was pushed in.”

Kelly says that intersection is a high-traffic area that’s particularly dangerous.

“They got to do something to fix it because there’s a lot of accidents,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that are homeless, and they’ve got hit by vehicles too. So they need some kind of signs to say slow down.”

Another witness, Chance, says the accident happened when he was coming home from work. He told CityNews something needs to be done about that specific area because it’s always filled with people and fast-moving vehicles.

“I think they have to help people about the security and also to communicate with some drivers when they are in this area that they should be careful when they are driving because this area is so dangerous and it’s so busy with people.”

The EPS major collision investigations section (MCIS) is leading the investigation.
