Keillor Point extended viewing area closed over safety concerns after record rains in summer

The City of Edmonton announced that it has closed the extended lookout structure in Keillor Point over public safety concerns due to slope instability.
The main trail and viewpoint remain open and is safe for public use.
In a press release, the city said record-breaking rains during the summer months caused damages to the viewing platform. The slopes were also previously known to have deterioration due to erosion and local instability.
“The current viewing platform is supported by the remnants of a pile wall originally installed to stabilize a portion of Keillor Road,” the city said. “The extreme conditions this summer caused additional loss of support for the structure.”
The city says it has installed barricades and signs to prevent access to the extended portion of the viewing point.
The viewing platform at Keillor Point was constructed in 2018 after the site became a popular destination on the River Valley trail following the closure of the Keillor Road in the 1990s.
Authorities ask visitors to follow posted signs and barriers and stay on designated paths and within open areas of the viewpoint, and avoid closed or unstable areas along the bank.
