Edmonton Valley Zoo says farewell to beloved armadillo Scarp

A much-loved critter of the Edmonton Valley Zoo is no longer.
Scarp, the 25-year-old three-banded armadillo, has passed away after a “long and meaningful life,” the zoo announced on social media.
“His gentle presence brought joy to visitors, volunteers and staff over the many years we had the privilege of caring for him,” the post reads. “He was known to thousands of visitors, often making appearances in education programs for Zoo School, day camps, and birthday parties.
“While saying goodbye is never easy, we are grateful for every day we were able to spend with him and for the special connection he shared with so many people. We’ll miss seeing his curious face and watching him go about his day in true Scarp fashion.”
Native to South America, three-banded armadillos are the only species of armadillo capable of curling into a perfect ball, according to the Edmonton Valley Zoo.
