Calgary woman trapped after porta‑potty tipped over in alleged hate‑motivated assault

Two men have been charged after a woman was trapped inside a tipped-over portable washroom in what police say was a hate‑motivated assault.
Calgary police say officers were called on July 2 after witnesses found a woman in distress outside a restaurant on Macleod Trail north of Southland Drive.
According to investigators, the woman had been using a portable washroom when two men approached and pushed it over, causing the door to slam against the pavement and leaving her trapped inside. The men then ran away.
Witnesses helped the woman out and called police. The woman was taken to hospital for exposure to waste matter and chemicals and has since recovered.
The Hate Crime Prevention Team reviewed security footage and spoke with witnesses and the victim. Investigators believe the men made comments about the woman’s gender and ethnicity, and determined hate motivation was a factor.
Police arrested Tyson David Cann, 24, of Calgary, and charged him with assault causing bodily harm. Fynn Storm Ferrier, 24, of Kimberley, B.C., is also charged with assault causing bodily harm.
Courts consider hate motivation only after a conviction. If a judge decides hate played a role, it becomes an aggravating factor that can increase the sentence.
