Spruce Grove collegiate baseball team faces league deadline

The future of Spruce Grove’s collegiate summer baseball team remains uncertain as the Western Canadian Baseball League awaits a plan from the Energy City Cactus Rats ownership group to complete its long-delayed stadium project and address financial concerns.
The league’s board of governors gave the organization until Tuesday to present a detailed plan for finishing construction on the ballpark and balancing its financial standing with the league.
According to the WCBL, plans for the stadium were first announced six years ago, with construction beginning a year later. The project then faced what league officials described as numerous delays during the COVID-19 pandemic and afterward.
Today, the stadium remains incomplete, leaving fans unable to attend home games and forcing them to travel to road contests to watch the team in person.
Even if the board approves the field for play during its Tuesday meeting, there is no guarantee fans will be allowed into the facility this season, said Kevin Kvame, president of the Western Canadian Baseball League.
“There’s a possibility the Board of Governors will green-light this field on Tuesday night for games, but it doesn’t not green-light it for fans,” said Kvame. “We have to receive the rest of the information as to what else is going to be done, we have to wait for permitting from the city of spruce grove to allow fans into the ball park, and whether that happens in weeks or months, we’re hoping to get a detailed plan from the cactus rats organization.”
The Cactus Rats are scheduled to host a home game at the field Wednesday. The board is expected to decide Tuesday night whether that game can proceed, taking field conditions and player safety into consideration.
The organization has received an occupancy permit from the City of Spruce Grove that would allow players and team staff to use the field for the game.
In its latest online statement, the Cactus Rats organization said it remains hopeful fans will be welcomed into the ballpark within the next month.
