Police looking to identify child victim of Edmonton-area sexual assault

Authorities in Alberta are looking to identify a child who was allegedly sexually assaulted in the Edmonton area by a man who was charged last year.

The alleged offender is 40-year-old Simon Lacoursiere, who was charged with child sexual exploitation offences by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit last October. Lacoursiere has been in police custody since then.

Police allege investigators uncovered further evidence, via forensic analysis of computers and electronic devices seized from Lacoursiere’s home, that two young Alberta girls were sexually assaulted.

“One of the girls was identified, while the other’s identity remains unknown,” ALERT said in a news release Thursday.

The unknown victim is believed to have been between six and eight years old when the alleged offences occurred in the Edmonton area sometime between November 2017 and February 2019.

Police are sharing a photo of a t-shirt the victim was wearing.

“Our primary concern is the victim’s safety and welfare. This would have been a traumatic event and we are looking to provide the necessary supports and resources for their recovery,” said ICE Cpl. Matthew Pepper.

To date, Lacoursiere has been charged with sexual assault; sexual interference; distributing child sexual abuse materials and obscene material; and bestiality.

He is scheduled to appear in court again for trial next April. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
