Alberta investing in career mentorship pilot program for Indigenous youth

Indigenous people in Alberta remain underrepresented in the skilled trades. As our Leo Cruzat reports, that is why the province is investing in a new mentorship program.

The Government of Alberta says it is investing $300,000 in a pilot program aimed at helping strengthen career mentorship opportunities for Indigenous youth.

The Building Indigenous Mentorship and Pathways Pilot Program reportedly focuses on mentorship, community-based outreach, and culturally informed career guidance to help Indigenous youth connect with training and employment opportunities in Alberta’s growing skilled trades sector.

Building Trades of Alberta will host three Indigenous trades mentorship symposiums in Calgary, Edmonton, and Fort McMurray, which aim to have Indigenous leaders, educators and skilled trades employers share information about career pathways and upcoming job opportunities.

“The Building Indigenous Mentorship and Pathways Pilot Program proves what’s possible when mentorship is rooted in community. Indigenous youth gain guidance, connections and a pathway into the trades, strengthening families, communities and Alberta’s workforce,” said Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Indigenous Relations.
