40 people displaced after fire damages apartment building in West Edmonton

A fire damaged an apartment building and displaced about 40 people in West Edmonton Thursday.

Edmonton Fire says they received reports of a fire around 5:30 p.m. in a multi-unit residential building near 101 Avenue and 162 Street.

A crew of 11 firefighters responded and put out the fire at 8:19 a.m.

There were no injuries reported.

A large part of the roof and the balcony appeared badly damaged. EFRS said the property damage was estimated to be $1.2 million.

“The Emergency Response Team (ESRT) supported 40 people displaced by the incident, and of those, 31 are currently being assisted by the Canadian Red Cross,” a spokesperson for EFRS said in an email.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
