Man charged with assaulting peace officer at Edmonton’s University of Alberta hospital

Edmonton police say a 45-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a peace officer in connection with an incident at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) on Monday morning.

The Edmonton Police Service tells CityNews officers were called shortly after 4 a.m. about a man who had allegedly damaged property within the hospital.

Police allege he resisted when he was asked to leave by peace officers, which led to an altercation. EPS officers were called and arrested the man.

No injuries were reported, and no other staff or patients were injured, police say.

Alberta Health Services tells CityNews the altercation happened in the emergency department between an individual and two protective services officers.

“Protective Services and Unit Leadership, who were already on shift in the UAH ED, offered support to patients, staff and physicians as needed,” AHS said in a statement. “Patient care was not interrupted at the UAH and there are no ongoing safety concerns.”

The man was charged with mischief under $5,000, resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, and assault causing bodily harm.
