Fire destroys under-construction home in Edmonton’s Spruce Avenue neighbourhood

An under-construction home in Edmonton’s Spruce Avenue neighbourhood was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning.

The blaze at the home near 103 Street and 112 Avenue, just a couple of blocks away from Kingsway Mall, was reported just after 5 a.m.

Video on social media showed a giant fireball with ash and debris falling from the sky.

According to Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, the fire spread to a neighbouring building, with charred shingles and ash on the snow-covered roof and smoke stains pouring out the closest window to the smouldering remains.

The next-door property owner told CityNews he’s left to deal with his insurance company to fix the damages.

“The glass in the window broke, so I’m going to have to board it up, make sure the tenants stay warm. Thank goodness was we’re not 30, 40 (degrees Celsius) below right now,” David Bennett said.

No injuries were reported and cause of fire is still under investigation.

Crews say the fire was declared under control at 6:07 a.m.

As of 10 a.m., seven firefighting crews remained on scene to ensure the fire was put out.
