Edmonton Phase 1 parking ban begins Wednesday 7 a.m. as snowfall continues

With heavy snowfall having already fallen on Edmonton and more on the way overnight, the city has declared a citywide Phase 1 parking ban.

The ban, covering arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes and roads within business improvement areas, will take effect Wednesday at 7 a.m. It’s expected to last three to five days.

Edmontonians are being asked to remove parked vehicles from those routes so that plows and graders can clear the snow. EPark zones are not active during Phase 1, including roadways marked with white “Seasonal No Parking” signs.

The City of Edmonton says it’s accelerated its standard response timeline by more than 24 hours.

“Given the significant snowfall over a short period, contracted graders are being deployed before snowfall ends, rather than waiting for accumulation to stop,” the city wrote in a news release. “This earlier deployment is intended to expedite clearing and reduce impacts on mobility.”

City officials faced significant criticism earlier this year for how the Knack administration handled snow clearing to begin the winter.

Val Dacyk, the general supervisor of infrastructure field operations at the City of Edmonton, is scheduled to meet the media Tuesday afternoon.

More coming.
