Avi Lewis leads NDP fundraising contributions, followed by MP McPherson

OTTAWA — NDP leadership candidate Avi Lewis received the lion’s share of donations over the last quarter, beating out the only sitting NDP MP who is also vying for the job.

Elections Canada reports Lewis secured $723,000 in donations from October to December, while NDP MP Heather McPherson raised $316,000.

Prime Minister Mark Carney raised $5 million during his campaign for the Liberal leadership last year, followed by now-former Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland, who collected $670,000.

The NDP leadership race was called after Jagmeet Singh stepped down as leader following his party’s brutal defeat in last year’s federal election, which saw the NDP lose party status in Parliament.

Tony McQuail is the NDP leadership contestant who raised the least money — just $95,000 in reported contributions in the last quarter.

Tanille Johnston collected $140,000, while Rob Ashton raised $206,000.
