Edmonton City Council appoints five members to police commission

Edmonton’s City Council appointed five members to the Edmonton Police Commission on Monday.

“City Council has supported an open recruitment process which attracted more than 100 qualified applicants,” said Mayor Andrew Knack in a statement.

“We are pleased that so many capable candidates applied to lend their expertise to the Commission, and welcome the successful appointees. Council looks forward to strengthening its relationship with the Commission and the Edmonton Police Service in our collaborative effort to build an even safer city for all Edmontonians.”

The five members appointed to the commission in the new year are as follows:

  • Karen Leibovici — a former Edmonton City Councillor and Alberta MLA
  • Barry McNabb — A businessman who has sat on several boards, including ATCO Electric, Edmonton’s Food Bank, Wheelchair Sports Alberta, the Boyle McCauley Health Centre and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
  • Peter Obiefuna — a lawyer.
  • Shazia Amiri — a social worker.
  • Ben Henderson — a former Edmonton City Councillor

The current commission is set to work until their term ends on Dec. 31, with the new commission starting their two-year term on Jan. 1, 2026. They will be joined by two City Councillors — Coun. Karen Principe and Coun. Anne Stevenson — as well as five members appointed by the Government of Alberta.

Edmonton’s Chief of Police responds directly to the Edmonton Police Commission.
