An early morning strip mall fire in northeast Edmonton has caused severe damage and money loss to a business.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services arrived at the strip mall on 82 Street and 127 Avenue around 4:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from a business.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 5:57 a.m., and it was declared out at 6:41 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The blaze destroyed the storage room of E & L Lighting.

“Definitely, it was a sad moment for everybody,” store manager Navjot Sidhu told CityNews. “Because it’s not a happy moment. It’s just shocking too.”

Sidhu estimates the blaze will cost them $25,000. He believes that figure could have been in the millions if not for the quick response of firefighters, who were on the scene within five minutes.

“You actually can smell it with a lot of smoke inside,” he said. “So if they didn’t stop it, like eventually this might get damaged properly.”

Navjot is now usure when his business can re-open. He told his staff not to come to work Wednesday.

The landlord of the building politely declined to comment about what happened.

Investigators are working to determine the cause.
