‘Everything we could see was fire’: More suspicious fires destroy under-construction homes in Belgravia, Glenora

Police are investigating two more suspicious fires Sunday at homes under construction in Central Edmonton's Glenora and Belgravia. Also, four separate suspected arsons in the Belgravia and King Edward Park areas in October. Lauren Boothby reports.

Another under-construction home in south Edmonton’s Belgravia neighbourhood went up in flames on Sunday night.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) says crews arrived around 11:15 p.m. to find the single-family house near 71a Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive fully engulfed in flames. It was declared out by 3:49 a.m., and there were no injuries reported.

Investigators were using drones Monday to determine how it caught fire.

Next-door neighbour Elmie Aloria was jolted from her sleep when her daughter saw the fire.

“That sudden eruption of the fire was just in a matter of seconds, and everything we could see was fire, almost from the house, and the smoke was billowing towards our house,” Aloria told CityNews.

The Edmonton mother was afraid to go back to sleep – even after the fire was out. She went to bed wearing her jacket in case she needed to leave quickly.

“You know, anything could happen,” she said. “So it’s really stressful and at the same time scary to me.”

Aloria is not the only resident on edge.

Belgravia’s Bill Timbers was left with more questions than answers after this latest fire.

“Is this intentional or is this unintentional?” Timbers asked.

“Is it one person? I don’t know. But we’re very concerned in the neighbourhood.”

The city councillor for Belgravia, which is in Ward papastew, is joining police in calling for people to take a look at any camera footage.

“It’s extremely concerning and extremely scary, especially with the conditions that we’ve had with the randomness of some of the fires,” said Coun. Michael Janz. “The fact that they’ve been distributed not just in one neighbourhood but in multiple neighbourhoods.”

Other blaze in Glenora

Much earlier Sunday, around 1:30 a.m., an under-construction home in Glenora — near 102 Avenue and 133 Street — was consumed by flames. The fire spread to both homes next door.

No injuries were reported there, either.

Edmonton police are investigating both of these latest blazes as suspicious, but authorities have not linked them to a recent string of fires they are investigating as arsons.

On Friday, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) turned to the public in an effort to try and solve that series of suspicious fires that recently occurred in the communities of Belgravia and King Edward Park. All four were multi-family infill homes under construction.
