Edmonton police are turning to the public for tips and video footage after a series of suspicious fires in four homes.
The fires took place in South Central Edmonton between Oct. 18 and 29. Police believe they have been intentional.
A fire on Oct. 18 at a construction site near his house in the King Edward neighbourhood damaged part of Rob Cormier’s house, including the roof and trees on the property.
“I was concerned about the pictures, and the property was up for sale,” Cormier said. “The deal just fell through this week, so I’m going to put it back up for sale.”
On Oct. 20, just before 1 a.m., Edmonton Fire responded to another structure fire along 90th Ave and 98th St. within a minute after the 911 call.
“There was crackling and snapping, and I didn’t know what it was, but it didn’t take us very long to figure out what it was,” said Heather Blair.
Some homes suffered damage, including the side mirror of Blair’s vehicle.
“If Ann hadn’t been a light sleeper, we might have all died in our sleep,” Blair said of her neighbour. “She was wakeful enough and called 911.”
Two fires at the Belgravia neighbourhood are also believed to be intentional: one on Oct.26, along 77th Ave. and 116th St. and another on 74th Ave. and 118A St. on Oct. 29.
Despite the fires, residents said they were not concerned about safety.
“I got two texts in the middle of the night from my neighbour in the back, and so the neighbours all watch over each other here,” Cormier said, “This is a jewel in town.”
Blair said the whole neighbourhood was out because of the commotion and that neighbours were very supportive.
“It’s very supportive, it’s like a little community, it’s like a little town in this area,” she added.
