Beloved Edmonton ICU Doctor Darren Markland dies in cyclist accident

A longtime and beloved ICU doctor in Edmonton has died.
Doctor Darren Markland was killed while riding his bike in the Rockies near Nordegg.
Markland was born in Rimbey and raised in Stony Plain. After physician training in Calgary, he made his life in edmonton and worked at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the doctor spoke frequently with CityNews about the situation inside his unit and Alberta’s healthcare system.
The news is hitting the city with community leaders sharing condolences. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi saying on social media, “To Edmonton, Darren was more than a healer, he was a champion for kindness, justice, community spirit, and had a deep appreciation of the nature that surrounds our beautiful city.”

Markland is survived by his wife and two sons.
An obituary online says doctor markland did not want a funeral. Instead, it asks those who want to honour him to do what he did every day… go outside, ride your bike, enjoy nature, and do something kind for a stranger. He was 54 years old.
