Edmonton-Calgary flight returns to YEG International Airport shortly after takeoff due to mechanical issue

A flight from Edmonton to Calgary was forced to return to the Edmonton International Airport shortly after departure because of a gear retraction issue on Tuesday evening.

Air Canada Express flight AC8143 returned to Edmonton just before 7 p.m. There were no injuries.

After landing, the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue with its nose gear, according to a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation, one of the main operators of Air Canada Express flights.

That new issue meant passengers needed to be transported back to the terminal by bus.

“Air Canada made alternate arrangements for the 39 customers to continue their journey the same night,” the spokesperson said.

The aircraft was being inspected by maintenance professionals on Wednesday.

Because of the incident, Edmonton International Airport tells CityNews the airport could not accept or depart any flights for a short time.

By 9:15 p.m., the plane had been removed from the runway, and passengers were being told to check their flight status online.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the plane had crashed upon landing.
