Edmonton restaurant closes after 43 years on Whyte Avenue

Continental Treat Fine Bistro on Whyte Ave. closes down after 43 years in business. As our Leo Cruzat reports, the owner is pointing to the rising food costs and safety concerns in the area.

For over 40 years, the Borowka family has owned two Edmonton restaurants, Continental Treat Fine Bistro in downtown and on Whyte Avenue.

Capturing the family’s love of cooking and sharing Eastern and Central European cuisine.

“For some reason, we all just love it. Even if we go to our friend’s place and they’re behind, we’ll just jump in there and help out,” said Sylvester Borowka, the owner of the Continental Treat Fine Bistro.

But after 43 years of business, the family decided to close down their Whyte Ave. location, pointing to rising food costs and safety concerns. Borowka says it was not an easy decision to make.

“There was even a break-in there a week ago, and the final thing is somebody was trying to set the oil on the fire behind the restaurant, so it was just getting like really tired with all of the break-ins and or attempted break-ins,” said Borowka.

People passing through or who knew about the long-standing restaurant just heard about the news.

“Yeah, if it were my business and I was here for 40 years, and then I had to shut down, that would kind of be sad,” said one Edmontonian.

Another saying, “It’s definitely a shame. I mean, there are a lot of stores around Whyte Ave that are just shutting down, and it’s a shame that this place is kind of just – not willing away. But it’s the heart of Edmonton, so it’s a shame to see this place go.”

Borowka says he’s sad to see the location go, but will always have the memories.

“Well, it’s like if you look at our Wall of Fame in all of the pictures, you know, so anything from actors to a different kind of bands,” said Borowka.

The Continental on Jasper Ave will stay open. Borowka is hoping his loyal customers from Whyte Ave will still make the trip across the river.

“It is becoming, you know, a destination where people come in for lunches, their special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.”
