ASIRT confirms officer shot armed suspect in Edmonton apartment, looking into use of force

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirmed an Edmonton police officer, lifted on a fire truck ladder, shot and injured a suspect who had weapons at a suite in an apartment building west of Downtown Edmonton on Aug. 12.

Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — has confirmed an officer shot an armed suspect inside an apartment last week.

On Aug. 12, a heavy police presence could be seen near 121 Street and Jasper Avenue, after police got a report that two men and a woman were in an apartment building, noting one of the men had weapons.

Edmonton police, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and EMS could be seen outside the apartment building for several hours before witnesses say they heard two loud bangs. Moments later, at least one person was seen taken away in handcuffs, and another on a stretcher.

ASIRT says one officer was in the bucket of a fire truck outside the home and shot his firearm, hitting the armed man inside the apartment.

The man was taken into custody and was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

ASIRT has confirmed their investigation will be looking into the use of force by the officer.

Anyone who may have any information is asked to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
