Witnesses report loud bangs, heavy police presence at Edmonton apartment building

A quiet afternoon turned chaotic quickly at an Edmonton apartment building Tuesday afternoon. James Dunn has early details.

A quiet Tuesday afternoon escalated inside an Edmonton apartment building.

There was a heavy police presence all afternoon and most of the evening on 121 Street and Jasper Avenue.

Multiple people who live in the building say police, firefighters and EMS rushed over at about 4 p.m.

Photos and videos sent to CityNews show an officer on a fire truck ladder holding what appears to be a firearm pointed towards one of the balconies.

Witnesses say they heard two loud bangs. Moments later, at least one person was seen taken away in handcuffs, and another on a stretcher.

“At first I thought it was construction because they are having construction here in the building,” said Tristen Auigbelle, who lives on the building’s fifth floor. “But, it was too close for comfort.”

The conditions of those involved was not immediately known.

A man wearing an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) jacket, the police watchdog typically tasked with investigating an officer’s use of force, was at the scene.
