A man who allegedly attacked an RCMP officer with a knife in a northeastern Alberta town was shot dead by police, and the province’s police watchdog is investigating.
Authorities say three Mounties were responding to a disturbance at a home in the town of Lac La Biche Sunday shortly before noon.
Police say “a confrontation occurred” and allege one of the officers shot the man after the knife attack.
RCMP did not confirm if the officer who was allegedly attacked is the one who fired his weapon.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the officer was treated for his injuries and released from hospital.
The director of law enforcement was notified, and an internal review process is underway. Meanwhile the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate.
Lac La Biche is about 215 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
