Mayoral candidate Rahim Jaffer unveiled a sweeping new proposal Tuesday to introduce free parking during evenings, weekends, overnight hours, and statutory holidays — a move he says will help revitalize Edmonton’s downtown and support struggling small businesses.
“Free parking is about more than just convenience — it’s about signalling that Edmonton is ready to come alive again,” said Jaffer at a press event. “People shouldn’t have to pay a premium just to support local shops or take their family downtown.”
Under Jaffer’s plan, parking downtown and in other key areas would be free after 5 p.m., as well as all day on weekends and holidays. A 30-minute grace period would also be introduced for short stops. Daytime weekday parking would be set at a flat rate of $2.50 per hour — down from current rates that range between $3.50 and $4.50.
Jaffer emphasized the plan as part of a broader effort to restore vibrancy and accessibility to the city. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “We’re putting forward real solutions to bring people back to our streets, our businesses and our public spaces.”
While surge pricing would still apply during peak events like Oilers games, Jaffer believes his proposal strikes a balance between revenue and revitalization.
He plans to release further policy details in the coming weeks, promising ideas “rooted in real-world experience and a belief in Edmonton’s potential.”
