Edmonton Centre MP Eleanor Olszewski was sworn in as a cabinet minister on Tuesday in a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
Olszewski will be Canada’s minister of emergency management and community resilience, and will also have the additional portfolio as the minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada.
She is one of the 28 new cabinet ministers and 10 secretaries of state who were sworn as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet.
In a press release announcing the cabinet, Carney said the new government was elected with a mandate to work on Canada-U.S. relations and the economy, among others.
“Canadians elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States, to build a stronger economy, to reduce the cost of living, and to keep our communities safe. This focused team will act on this mandate for change with urgency and determination,” Carney said.
The appointment of Olszewski – one of only two Liberal MPs in Alberta – comes at a time when separatist sentiment has made the news following the introduction of Bill 54, which lowers the threshold for a citizen-led referendum by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
A first-time MP, Olszewski was elected in the riding of Edmonton Centre after former Liberal cabinet minister Randy Boissonnault did not seek re-election.
Olszewski had previously made unsuccessful bids in Edmonton Strathcona in 2015 and 2019.
