Mill Woods strip mall fire was arson, did $500K in damages: Edmonton police

Edmonton police say last year’s fire at a strip mall in Mill Woods was deliberately set, and they’ve released surveillance footage showing the suspect.
The early morning fire on May 27, 2024, at Hamud Halal Meat and Grocery – near 10 Avenue and Knottwood Road East – did more than $500,000 in damages after spreading to several businesses.
Edmonton police say no one was in the building at the time.

In the footage released by investigators Wednesday, a suspect in a baseball cap and hoodie appears to light a flame while standing outside the door to the business. Police also released footage from a nearby business.
Authorities say nearly 11 months after the incident, their “investigative strategies” have been exhausted, and they’re appealing to the public for help.
Anyone with security or dash camera footage, or who witnessed suspicious activity in the area between 2-3 a.m. that morning, is being asked to contact them at 780-423-4567 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
