South Edmonton strip mall fire did millions in damages, being investigated as arson

This week’s fire at a southeast Edmonton strip mall, which destroyed dozens of units and resulted in several million dollars in damages, is being investigated as an arson.

The Edmonton Police Service says 25 units were destroyed in Monday’s overnight blaze at the strip mall on 34 Avenue and 92 Street.

The strip mall has several businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, a travel agency, and a dental clinic.

Officials say no one was injured, but businesses were left charred, damaged and destroyed.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) crews responded around 12:40 a.m. and called a second-alarm fire shortly after to bring in additional units. Approximately 40 firefighters were at the scene, and it took about two hours to control the flames.

EFRS determined the fire was suspicious, and police are investigating it as such.

Authorities are asking anyone with dash camera or security camera footage from the area between midnight and 1 a.m., or anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious, to contact police at 780-423-4567.
