Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi did not answer questions from CityNews Thursday on whether he will run for the federal Liberals this coming election.
Several news reports on Thursday suggested Mayor Sohi intends to run for a Liberal seat in Parliament, but he refused to comment after a housing announcement with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

However Carney did praise the former Justin Trudeau cabinet minister. “Sohi is a public servant, and he will continue to serve Albertans, Edmontonians and I hope Canadians as well,” the prime minster said of Edmonton’s mayor.
Sohi was the Liberal Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods between 2015 and 2019, before being elected as mayor in 2021. His current term ends this October.
In a follow-up statement, the mayor said he’s been asked to run for Carney’s Liberals and he’ll have more to say in the coming days.
In an email to CityNews Sohi said, “I love Edmonton, and I love Canada. This country has given me so much. I am honoured to serve my city in every way that I have: as an ETS bus driver, a City Councillor, a Member of Parliament and federal minister, and now as Mayor of Edmonton.
“Today, our country faces an unprecedented threat to our sovereignty, our workers, working families, and local businesses from President Donald Trump. Given the threat of this disruption, and its impact on the Edmonton region’s economy, it is imperative that strong and experienced regional voices are stepping up to defend our economy, support our local businesses, and protect our people,” he added.
