Alberta pipeline builder fined $350K for 2022 workplace death

An Alberta pipeline construction company is facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines following a workplace death two years ago.

Excel Projects Ltd. in Edson, Alta. has been fined $350,000 after pleading guilty to an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) violation for failing to prevent unintended equipment evacuation.

The company faced 20 charges from OHS due to a March 2022 incident where a machine turned on and pulled a worker into the equipment, resulting in the worker’s death.

The crown withdrew the 19 other charges and both parties have 30 days to appeal.

The penalties the company faces include a $5,000 fine and $345,000 toward scholarships for heavy equipment operator students at Olds and Portage colleges, promoting workplace safety.
