Edmonton police warn of ATM fraudster

By News Staff

Edmonton police are warning the public about a 55-year-old who is allegedly defrauding people while they withdraw cash from ATMs.

The Edmonton Police Service alleges the man has operated the same scheme multiple times. They say he appears to talk on the phone with his financial institution, claiming he has reached his withdrawal limit or that his account is being frozen.

Police say the man then approaches other people at the ATM and asks them for a loan – money he would use on rent or gas.

“After gaining the sympathy of the customer, he promises to pay the money back, but is never heard from again,” EPS said in a news release.

Police allege four complainants – with incidents dating between February and September 2024 – have lost just under $2,000.

Tracey Reid has been charged with four counts of fraud and uttering a forged document. He has since been released.

Police believe the accused may have defrauded others and are encouraging those possible victims to come forward. Authorities also believe he is at high risk of reoffending.
