Edmonton city council voting to crack down on surface-level parking lots in Edmonton's downtown

Edmonton city council passed a new bylaw that would allow temporary surface-level parking lots to receive development permits.

It’s on the condition they make headway on improvements like paving – adding shrubs and trees – as well as increasing accessibility, within 18 months.

Councillors heard a report Monday there are 120 surface parking lots in Edmonton’s downtown without development permits – and no way to get one.

Edmonton’s mayor says something needs to be done with the large number of parking lots in Edmonton’s downtown.

“We got to find solutions,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. “There’s so much development opportunities in our city, and sometimes parking lots are just held for speculation and investment purposes, which is fine, but they also need to be kept to a standard that’s more sightly.”
