Edmonton police find weapon believed to be used in a murder in the River Valley
Edmonton police have confirmed they’ve found a weapon believed to be used in the murder of Aaron Staszko on Oct. 16, 2024.
EPS says on Dec. 3, officers were able to recover a range-handled machete with a black curved blade on a dirt path in the River Valley near 20 Street and 137 Avenue after receiving several tips from the public.

Investigators believe that the weapon had been inadvertently pickup by a passerby, and was later discarded at the location where it was found.
Staszko was found in critical condition at a home on 34 Street and 138 Avenue in October. He was taken to hospital, where he died.
An autopsy determined Staszko was injured by an edged weapon, and the manner of death was homicide.
On Oct. 19, police arrested 33-year-old Michael Ferreira on a warrant for second degree murder. Ferreira has also been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats in relation to his interactions with a 35-year-old woman during the initial disturbance incident.
