Authorities say two people are dead after a small plane crashed at an airport in northern Alberta.

Mounties say a 30-year-old resident of Manning, Alta., and a 27-year-old Australian man were killed in the crash at the Peace River airport Tuesday around 4:50 p.m.

They were both declared dead at the scene. Police believe they were the only two occupants of the aircraft.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating.
