The province is sounding the alarm over wildfires in northern Alberta, with 30 degree highs expected early next week.

There were 65 blazes burning across the province Thursday, including 13 that are out of control in the High Level area.

A fire north of Fort McMurray prompted Suncor to evacuate some workers from its firebag site. The company said only essential staff are staying, as the fire burns about eight kilometres away from its main plant.

“We have a lot of work to do on that one yet. Currently, it’s burning parallel to the area where the firebag is. We’re expecting some wind changes and we’re hoping that blows the fire back on itself which would be very helpful,” explained Alberta Forestry and Parks Minister, Todd Loewen.

The province says they have enough equipment and firefighters to handle the current situation but are asking Albertans to be careful with campfires this weekend.

More than a dozen fire restrictions and bans are in place. The Minister says he does not expect Edmonton and Calgary to be swamped by smoke.
