What kind of weather is expected in Edmonton this summer?

It’s cold, damp, and miserable in Edmonton. The weather, still not warming up in the city. But Edmontontians CityNews spoke to say the weather isn’t dampening their mood in the summer. 

“It is what it is. We live where we live what are you gonna do?” said one Edmontonian.

Inconsistent weather is something Edmontonians face yearly. Extremely hot to extremely cold, and forecasts that are not accurate. Environment and Climate Change Canada is projecting a hot summer across the country, but experts now claim Edmonton doesn’t necessarily fall into that category.

“What I found for Edmonton was pretty unique. For the most part, there aren’t major differences. There is no colossal differential. If anything, Edmonton usually ends up 1 to 2 degrees cooler in these neutral cycles,” said Citynews Meteorologist Kevin Stanfield.

Those changes are having an effect across the city. Tuesday, the Edmonton Riverhawks baseball game was delayed because of a thunderstorm, and the Edmonton Prospects game was completely cancelled Wednesday, as noted on their social media.

According to Stanfield, the city will see back-and-forth highs and lows in temperatures all summer long.

“With these patterns, you tend to get a more cyclical rotation. You get a couple of days where rainfall picks up and then you get a couple days where the temperature picks up,” said Stanfield.

But many Edmontonians are still optimistic, about a hot and safe summer.

“I mean you can hope, but it’s gonna do what it’s gonna do.”
