Stony Plain Road to be closed for Valley Line West construction

The road will once again be closed over the summer as the city looks to further expand the LRT into the west end of the city. Businesses are concerned about the loss of traffic in the area during times of high cost.

The City of Edmonton says Stony Plain Road will be closed starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 29, as construction on the Valley Line West LRT resumes.

Stony Plain will be fully closed between 129 Street and 139 Street, until the end of August.

All east and west traffic will be detoured along 102 Avenue or 107 Avenue.

The City does note that north and south access across Stony Plain Road will be maintained on 134 Street.

Meanwhile, businesses are concerned that the reduction in traffic could hurt business.

“The businesses in that area have really been effected by the road closure,” said Todd Janes, the executive director of the Stony Plain Business Association.

The Stony Plain Business Association says the investment will produce incredible rewards in the future, but in order for businesses to reap those rewards they need to outlast high inflation costs and now less traffic to their businesses.

“We know that over time it will be good, but in the meantime it’s difficult getting through that. So, we need construction to be done safe. We need it done quick and effectively, and we need that support.”

Construction work is expected to take place mainly during the day, and will replace temporary pavement with permanent pavement, install sidewalks, street lights, foundations to support the Overhead Catenary System, as well as track bed construction and first rail installation.
