Autopsy confirms 11-year-old died by dog bite

Edmonton’s Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy of the 11-year-old boy who was attacked by two dogs in southeast Edmonton on Monday.

The autopsy confirmed the child’s death was a dog bite, however, EPS notes the manner of death is pending further investigation.

Police also confirmed the dogs belonged to a roommate of the boy’s father — who he was visiting from B.C. at the time of the attack.

In a statement Wednesday, School District 53 — Okanagan Similkameen — said “Upon receiving news on Tuesday morning, the district’s critical incident team was immediately gathered, notified of the situation, and developed a response plan to support the staff and students.”

They add supports will be made available as needed, and will be provided by the district.

“Due to the nature of this tragedy and the young age of the student and their peers, the school and district would ask for privacy as we work to support students and staff, and for the family who is now dealing with their loss.  The school and district send our heartfelt condolences to the family.”

The City of Edmonton has previously confirmed they had responded multiple times to the home after receiving complaints of dog attacks, which resulted in warnings and one ticket.

Both dogs were seized by Animal Control Peace Officers on Monday, and EPS says an investigation is still on going.
