Alberta union activist running for NDP leadership
It’s now a five-person race to replace Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley.
Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan posted to X Thursday he had submitted paperwork to Elections Alberta, making his candidacy official.
Two announcements from me today:
1. I’ve officially been approved to stand as a candidate in the Alberta NDP leadership race.
2. I have Covid.
I’m very excited about #1 … not so much about #2. pic.twitter.com/VrxuIBIOifAdvertisement

The union boss joins former Deputy Premier Sarah Hoffman, former Minister of Justice Kathleen Ganley, and Edmonton MLAs Rakhi Pancholi and Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse.
In another social media post, McGowan says he has COVID-19, and won’t be making public appearances until he tests negative for at least two days.
He also says he won’t be stepping down as president of the AFL while participating in the leadership race.
