Another popular Edmonton restaurant set to close at the end of February

Chicken for Lunch announced it's closing its doors later this month, just days after Northern Chicken, a different restaurant, announces its closing its downtown location.

One of Edmonton’s most popular lunch spots in the downtown area had a massive line Wednesday.

Chicken for Lunch has been a staple in the city for over 32 years, but all good things must come to an end and the restaurant is closing its doors later this month.

“I’m getting all emotional because I’ll miss all my friends,” said Amy Quon, the owner of Chicken for Lunch.

Quon has been cooking for the downtown crowd for 32 years and many long-time customers say, as impossible as it sounds, that Amy remembers everyone by name. She’s known simply as ‘the boss.’

“My husband’s a regular so it’s a big deal for our family,” said one customer CityNews spoke to.

Chicken for Lunch is an Edmonton staple, even for those whose life has taken them away from downtown.

“Honestly, I haven’t been back. This is the first time I’ve been back in ten years,” said one Edmontonian.

The restaurant’s closure comes just days after another popular restaurant announced its closure.

Northern Chicken, is closing its doors after seven years. In a social media post, they said they are closing because it’s too tough to carry on.

Quon says the reason Chicken for Lunch is closing, is because her lease is up and the food court is being renovated, which is causing further disruption. All of that change is coming after the pandemic fundamentally changed how many people work downtown.

“They only come three days to work. Three days. So you don’t know which days they come. Before we were busy Monday to Friday, now our busy days are Wednesday and Thursday,” explained Quon.

The restaurant’s last day of business is scheduled for February 29, which gives regulars enough time to relive memories.

If you miss it, Quon’s famous chicken will be available at her restaurant Lingnan on 104 Street, but the catch, she’ll want to hear all about your Chicken for Lunch memories.

“Thank you for letting me be so bossy. I love you all, thank you.”
