RCMP officers to field test body cameras

Expect to see more body cameras on Alberta RCMP officers, including some in the Edmonton region.

Starting this month, Parkland County, St. Paul, and Grand Prairie RCMP will be field testing new cameras, along with officers in Nova Scotia and Nunavut.

This is the second time these groups of officers are testing cameras as the national policing agency looks to find the right model to roll out nationally.

“Body-worn cameras can help increase trust between police and the communities they serve because the video evidence collected will provide an independent, unbiased and objective way to capture interactions between the public and police officers,” said the RCMP in a statement.

The RCMP says if these cameras work, you could see cameras from coast to coast to coast in about a year and half.
