Man in custody after hours of negotiations result in apartment fire

Edmonton police say one man is in custody following an apartment fire Thursday night.

EPS says officers were at an apartment building at 107 Street and 79 Avenue throughout the evening of Jan. 25 and into Jan. 26, to assist another agency that was trying to carry out a court order.

Police say while at the apartment, the man reportedly barricaded himself in his suite.

Some time during negotiations, a fire broke out within the suite, and the building had to be evacuated.

Around 12:48 a.m., following the evacuation, the man was taken into custody.

Police say seven people were taken to a hospital for medical assessment.

EPS note the Director of Law Enforcement was notified, and determined the incident was not within the scope of an ASIRT review.
