An Edmonton police officer has been charged in connection with an on-duty shooting in 2024.
On March 1, 2024, EPS responded to a report of a stabbing near Winterburn Road and 107 Avenue.
It is believed that a man stabbed another man around 7:30 p.m. before fleeing in a truck.
A civilian vehicle reportedly pursued the suspect and was eventually rammed by the truck. When officers arrived at that scene, police say there was a confrontation between law enforcement and the suspect.
That led to an officer firing his gun, striking the suspect. Following this, he was taken to hospital by paramedics.
Friday, Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — said that through their investigation, they believe that an offence had been committed.
Per procedure, the case was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), which confirmed that charges should be laid against the officer.
ASIRT says on Sept. 4, Sgt. Neil Thompson was charged with aggravated assault. Thompson has been released on an undertaking and is expected to appear in court on Oct. 15.
