Leduc city council — the city best known for having Edmonton’s airport — is asking the province to lower the speed limit on the stretch of the QE2 highway going through the city.
The mayor says it’s become an unsafe stretch of road.
“Part of the problem is in the winter the overpass gets very slippery and excess speed — 9,000 cars a month are in excess of 30km over the speed limit,” said Bob Young, Mayor of Leduc.
Young says that according to research done by the University of Alberta, Leduc city council voted unanimously to ask the province to lower the speed limit to 80kms/hr down from 110 through the part of the highway going through the city.
Adding that stretch of highway sees double the accidents compared to other parts of the highway.
The idea came with the speed limit currently set to 80 for overpass construction, which saw a reduction in collisions.
Mayor Young says not only could it reduce collisions and slow down speeders, but make life easier for the neighbours.
“QE2, with the volume of traffic and the speed, it creates a lot of noise for the neighbours as well,” said Young.
As to what happens now, and whether it will be slower going for drivers travelling through Leduc, CityNews reached out to the province’s transportation ministry for comment, which said they will review Leduc city council’s request.
