Edmonton workers brave frigid temperatures

While most of us stay home and avoid the deep freeze this weekend, don’t forget about the people who have to work outside.

Days like today make many grateful they have a job that keeps them mostly indoors, however, that’s not the case for everyone.

“On a day like today, even though it is colder, we just slap on another layer and head out there,” said Tanner Montes, with JustJunk Edmonton.

It’s business as usual for Montes and the crew at JustJunk, saying there isn’t a temperature that would make them stop hauling away people’s unwanted junk and old furniture.

As any seasoned Edmontonian will tell you, Montes says it’s all about wearing layers, adding this kind of weather has its drawbacks but also its benefits.

“I think the only thing I don’t like is heavier gloves you’ll have to wear. Which a lot of the time will reduce how much you feel through the gloves, half the time I won’t even know if I’m grabbing something properly,” said Montes.

“But for the most part, the cold’s not too bad. I find it’s really good for refrigerators and stuff cause you can just slide it across the snow easily.”

While most plan to avoid the outside this weekend, don’t forget about the people who deliver your food.

“During weather like this, especially in the winter time, I put more into my vehicle than any other time of the year. $25 gets me a third of a tank, I was on empty, and I’ll blow through most of that tonight,” said Kara Danvers, a Skip the Dishes driver.

Danvers says surprisingly there hasn’t been a large uptick in orders since the cold snap hit — adding to that — averaging two or three shifts a week, not as many tips. Not surprisingly alcohol delivery paying the most.

They say, that while you’d expect more to be ordering instead of going out, it comes down to money.

“When Skip started implementing service fees, our tips started dropping significantly, because people assume that money is going to the driver but it’s not.”
