A 49-year-old man died in police custody Friday evening.
The Edmonton Police Service says officers were called to an apartment building at 112 Avenue and 80 Street.
Officers arrested the man, who say they claim was intoxicated, and took him to the EPS Detainee Management Unit.
When they arrived, police say the man “suffered a medical event” and died on scene, despite first aid by paramedic and officers.
The Director of Law Enforcement has directed that the investigation into the man’s death be handled by Edmonton police. That means Alberta’s police watchdog ASIRT will not be taking over.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
