Three adults charged in connection to death of toddler in Edmonton

Edmonton police have charged three people with criminal negligence causing death, after a 23-month-old boy died last year.
EPS says on Sept. 15, 2023, the toddler’s 34-year-old mother allowed a 20-year-old, who was a friend, to take care of her son.
Police say the 20-year-old allegedly took the toddler for a walk near the home, adding during the walk, she noticed the toddler showing signs of medical distress.
The woman rushed the child back to his home, where the mother and her common-law — a 26-year-old man who was not the boy’s biological father — were inside,” police explain.
Investigators say over the next few hours, all three of the adults tried to help the boy but were unsuccessful.
By 6:30 p.m., the mother and the friend took the toddler to a nearby medical clinic, where staff noticed he was unresponsive and called 911. Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed the boy to a hospital where he was declared dead.
An autopsy was later conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Police say toxicology results confirmed the cause of death was an overdose of Carfentanil, fentanyl, and p-fluorofentanyl toxicity. Investigators add the manner of death was accidental ingestion.
On Dec. 11, police charged the 20-year-old with criminal negligence causing death.
On Dec. 27, the mother and common-law turned themselves into police, where they were both charged.
EPS says it will not be naming anyone involved in this case to protect the identity of another youth in the family.
