Red Deer Catholic School trustee says ‘Holy Spirit’ told her to post controversial meme

By Phil Wood

A school board trustee in central Alberta is claiming divine intervention was behind her posting a controversial image on social media, comparing Pride flags to the Nazi regime.

A ruling from the Red Deer Catholic School Board found that Monique LaGrange had violated its policies and code of conduct when she posted the now-deleted image on Aug. 27.

The meme showed a picture of children waving flags with the Nazi swastika above a picture of kids waving Pride flags, with the caption “Brainwashing is brainwashing.”

Since the post garnered attention, there have been numerous calls for LaGrange’s resignation, including from the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA).

She has already been removed from her role as director with the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association but will remain on the Red Deer Catholic School Board.

Last Friday, the board ordered LaGrange to take sensitivity training and issue a public apology, while she receives new restrictions on her role.

However, the trustee is doubling down.

In a 15-page document released by the board, LaGrange defended her post, claiming an unfair bias against her, and that the Pride flag is being used to silence people.

Her lawyer says she plans on legally challenging the board’s decision and has no plans to apologize.
